De eerste Volkswagen met een vooraan geplaatste lijnmotor, waterkoeling en plaatsbesparende voorwielaandrijving. Een zeer ruim interieur voor die tijd, hoge zitpositie en nieuwe veiligheidsfeatures. Toch was deze voorganger van de Passat niet het commercieel succes dat werd verwacht.
