Dat Volkswagen in de WRC dit seizoen is nog licht uitgedrukt. Met hun Polo R WRC pakten ze reeds 4 van de 6 overwinningen. Tijdens de eerste dag van de rally van Sardegna in Italië pakten ze zowel de eerste, de vijfde als de zesde plaats in.
